Software

What is Computer Software ?
Computer software is the job descriptions of what a computer can perform. It can't be touch physically .Most computers come with software already installed. Software is also available in CD where the user inserts the disk into the hard disk and follows the installation instructions. As well as, every software is available on internet. Computer software is basically a series of instructions that tells a computer how to do a particular job. For example, Nero is an example of computer software. Nero software is used for burning CD's.Software is a genetic term for organized collections of computer data and instructions, often broken into two major categories: system software that provides the basic non-task-specific functions of the computer, and application software which is used by users to accomplish specific tasks.
Computer software can be divided into two main categories:-
  • Operating software(O/S) and
  • Application software.
Operating System (0/S):Operating system is also called "System Software". System software  is a set of one or more progrmas designed to control the operation and extend the processing capability of computer system. In general computer's system performs one or more of the following functions:
  • Supports development of other application software.
  • Supports execution of other application software.
  • Moniters effective use of various hardware resources such as CPU, memory, peripherals, etc.
  • Communicates with and control operations of peripherals devices such as printer, disk, tape, etc.
Hence, system software makes the operation of a computer system more effective and efficient, It helps the hardware components work together, and provide support for the development and execution of applcation software. The progrmas included in a system softwarepackage are called system programs.
This system consists of the basic functions that computers can perform. An example would be showing movement on a screen such as a mouse cursor was the user moves the mouse. Examples:- Windows vista, Windows XP, Linux and Unix(Server edition and Home edition).

Application Software: These are applications that allow the computer to perform the job. Application software is used to accomplish precise tasks other than just running the computer system. This can include voice, play or record music, view videos, play games, etc. Other examples of application software include permitting access to the internet and printing documents. Application software is the software that indirectly interacts with the computer. Application software is contrast with system software and middleware,  which manage and integrate a computer's capabilities, but typically do not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. A simple, if imperfect analogy in the world of hardware would be the relationship of an electric light bulb (an application) to an electric power generation plant (a system). The power plant merely generates electricity, not itself of any real use until harnessed to an application like the electric light that performs a service that benefits the user.
