Virus & Anti-Virus

What is Virus ?
A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infected a system. The term "virus" is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware's, including but not limited to adware and spyware  programs that do not have the reproduct ability. A true virus can spread from one computer to another computer when its host is taken to the target computer; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable devices such as a floppy disk, pendrive, CD's or DVD's and other removal devices. Virus is corrupted the system files, and it is very harmful for computer. A  program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. Viruses can also replicate themselves. All computer viruses are man made. A simple virus that can make a copy of itself over and over again is relatively easy to produce. Even such a simple virus is dangerous because it will quickly use all available memory and bring the system to a halt. An even more dangerous type of virus is one capable of transmitting itself across networks and by passing security systems. Some software products are also available to remove them with a minimum of harm to the "infected" files. Some file infector viruses attach themselves to program files, usually selected .COM or .EXE files. Some can infect any program for which execution is requested, including .SYS, .OVL, .PRG, and .MNU files. When the program is loaded, the virus is loaded as well. Other file infector viruses arrive as wholly-contained programs or scripts sent as an attachment to an e-mail note. Some viruses are self-modifying, in order to make detection more difficult. Such viruses are called polymorphic.
Unfortunately, the effects of an infection are pretty unpleasant. The virus or worm can,
  • Disable the computer
  • Add, modify or delete files or reformat the hard disk. A worm eats up storage space and slows down the computer, but won't alter or delete files.
  • Steal addresses held in our computer to send on virus-infected emails to our friends, colleagues, clients or customers
  • Send unsolicited, bulk email (spam) to those in our mail address books and other users

What is Anti-Virus ?
Antivirus (or anti-virus) software is used to prevent, detect, and remove malware, including computer viruses, worms, and trojan horses. Such programs may also prevent and remove adware, spyware, and other forms of malware. In order to be an effective defense, your antivirus software needs to run in the background at all times, and should be kept updated so it recognizes new versions of malicious software. The market for this kind of program has expanded because of Internet growth and the increasing use of the Internet by businesses concerned about protecting their computer assets. A utility that searches a hard-disk for viruses and removes any that are found. Most antivirus programs include an auto-update feature that enables the program to download profiles of new viruses so that it can check for the new viruses as soon as they are discovered. It is very important that you protect your computer(s) against these infections, as failure to do so can result in the compromise of your banking details and credit/debit card information as well as the loss of your photographs, music, essays, correspondence etc.If you don't have up-to-date anti-virus software installed, then your computer at on risk.
